One of many exercises for an inking class. This was a pen exercise, and I believe I used the trusty Hunt 102 throughout. The model is the versatile and gorgeous ~fiercesoniaa, check out her photography!

I'm really enjoying seeing these, Ken. I find it hard to shade skin in pen and ink, without it looking coarse and overly textured. Any advice?

Well, there are tons of things I could tell anyone probably, once I saw their work. In general, a good rule to follow would be to probably rein in any tendencies to overink....OR, look at people like John Clement Coll or Franklin Booth (or Berni Wrightson's Frankenstein book)...or maybe Gary Gianni...they all do good jobs of inking faces and making it work. One essential, as I am sure you know, is to keep in mind the shape of the planes you are inking and try to ink in directions of those planes (as opposed to just inking a lot of straight lines across something to attain a tone). Having said all this, especially when inking women's faces, sometimes it is just impossible to ink all the shadows you see (for example, in a ref photo) without the face looking older than you want.

Well said! I'm not as well-versed in good linework artists, as I am painters (due to my background), so I shall trot off to Google and do some, er, Googling! I do know of Wrightson, though. Thanks, Ken. Hope all is going well with you!

Oh, by the way....I did a Bob Marley painting years ago that is in here somewhere (or in the music section on my site), if you're curious.
